About Cathy Witlox
(See Cathy’s résumé for a point-form version.)
After earning her bachelor’s degree in English language and literature from the University of Western Ontario, Cathy Witlox completed a post-diploma certificate in Book and Magazine Publishing at Centennial College (1998). Upon graduation, she was hired by one of Canada’s largest publishers for an in-house proofreading position. In 1999, she moved into the role of copy editor.
Cathy launched her freelance editing career in 2004 and has since gained further experience in other forms of editing, including structural editing, stylistic (line) editing, and in copywriting. She has provided her editorial services to trade and educational publishing houses, large and small businesses, schools, websites, magazines, newspapers, marketing companies, government bodies, professional associations, and individual writers.
In 2013, Cathy was contracted by Nelson Education to write an online grammar workbook to accompany a bestselling business English textbook. In 2014, she wrote another online grammar workbook and was contracted to co-write a new edition of Canadian Writer’s Resources Now, an educational website for college students. Her first co-authored print textbook, Canadian Business English, 7th edition, was released in January 2016.
As well as editing full-time and doing occasional professional writing, Cathy teaches copy editing in Ryerson University’s publishing program, a grammar and writing course for business professionals at the University of Toronto’s School of Continuing Studies, and grammar and editing workshops for individual businesses and organizations. When not working, Cathy spends much of her time walking her three dogs with her husband, reading, knitting, volunteering, and blogging.
Cathy is a proud member of the Editors’ Association of Canada.
